2025 NCHSAA 4A Basketball Championships


WINSTON-SALEM — The North Mecklenburg Vikings overcame a tough challenge from the New Hanover Wildcats at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, securing back-to-back 4A Men’s Basketball Championships.

With this victory, North Mecklenburg now holds four state titles, including a co-championship from the 2020 COVID-shortened season.

New Hanover started strong, surging to a 31-18 lead by the end of the first quarter. However, North Mecklenburg battled back, tying the game by the opening moments of the fourth quarter. The Vikings then built a seven-point lead, but the Wildcats fought to within three, setting up a dramatic finish. In the final seconds, New Hanover launched a potential game-tying three-pointer, but the shot missed, sealing the Vikings' victory.

Rodmik Allen led the Wildcats with 14 points, five assists, five rebounds, and four steals, earning the East Most Outstanding Player award. Kellum Brown added 13 points, while C.J. Kournegay contributed 10.

For North Mecklenburg, Chadlyn Traylor delivered 22 points, four rebounds, and four assists, earning West Most Outstanding Player honors. Carson Evans led the Vikings with 24 points and three rebounds, taking home the Charlie Adams Most Valuable Player Award.

With their resilient comeback, North Mecklenburg cemented their place as a powerhouse in North Carolina high school basketball, adding another championship to their storied program.

WINSTON-SALEM — The Lake Norman Wildcats made history, edging past the Wakefield Wolverines in a thrilling finish at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum to capture their first-ever NCHSAA Women’s Basketball Championship.

Wakefield’s Lyla Bagwell drained a clutch three-pointer to tie the game at 41-41 late in the fourth quarter. However, Lake Norman had one final play up its sleeve. Alexis Shehan executed a perfect back-door pass to Rayana Minard, who sank the game-winning layup as time expired.

Bagwell finished with 11 points and six rebounds, earning East Most Outstanding Player honors.

Shehan led the Wildcats with 13 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, securing the West Most Outstanding Player award.

Minard, who scored 10 points—including the decisive basket—while adding three steals and three rebounds, was named the Kay Yow Most Valuable Player of the championship.

With their dramatic last-second victory, Lake Norman cemented its place in history, claiming its first state title in unforgettable fashion.
