Durham, N.C. – Ashley Wins Inaugural Flag Football State Championship with 13-7 Victory Over Apex
Ashley High School claimed the first-ever unofficial state championship in flag football, overcoming a 7-6 halftime deficit to defeat Apex High School 13-7.
Apex struck first with a big play on fourth down, as quarterback Cosette Lavielle connected with Lindsey McKinney on a deep touchdown pass. McKinney then tossed a successful extra-point pass to Mindy McLaughlin, giving Apex a 7-0 lead with 5:20 left in the first half.
Ashley quickly responded. Eagles quarterback Sawyer Rigdon launched a deep pass to Elin Bentley for their first score. However, the extra-point attempt was unsuccessful, leaving Apex ahead 7-6 at halftime.
In the second half, Ashley's defense took control, shutting out Apex's offense. Rigdon then delivered the game-winning touchdown on a short run, followed by a successful extra-point pass to Addison Foland. That gave Ashley a 13-7 lead, which they maintained until the final whistle.
Rigdon's all-around performance earned her the Most Valuable Player award for the championship game. Mia Agrillo of Ashley was named Defensive Most Outstanding Player, while Apex’s Lindsey McKinney received the Offensive Most Outstanding Player honor.
This landmark flag football state playoff showcased the growing popularity of the sport. Though not officially sanctioned by the N.C. High School Athletic Association, the event marks an important milestone in the development of girls' flag football in North Carolina.
